Principal’s Message

Welcome to St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School Annandale.

As a parent and an educator for over 27 years, I know what I want my child to receive from their experience at school, and it is my privilege to work towards providing those very important elements in the faith and learning journey of your children.

Firstly, we want our children to be happy. At St Brendan’s our motto is ‘Inspiring hearts and minds – one child at a time’. Happiness is the ‘hearts’ factor. We empower students to take an active role in feeling happy at school. We want students to feel cared for and cared about. We want them to enjoy learning and their time with each other.

Secondly, we want our children to be a part of a learning environment that supports them in realising their full potential. This is the ‘minds’ factor. At St Brendan’s, we use a growth mindset that underpins our teaching and learning philosophy. We model this attitude by not saying ‘I can’t do that’ but rather ‘I can’t do that, yet’.

But what else makes St Brendan’s the school I am proud to lead, and one which I would send my children to? St Brendan’s is a faith-centred community. St Brendan’s was founded by the Sisters of St Joseph, an order established by St Mary of the Cross, MacKillop. The charism of our founders is reflected in the school’s mission to ‘not see a need without doing something about it’. This underpins the way the community reach out to each other.

The saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ is a part of our fabric. Annandale is often referred to as having a ‘village atmosphere, a ‘piece of the country in the city’. Being a part of this community has reinforced this for me and I experience it every day.

I invite you too, to be a part of our wonderful community. We welcome not only Catholic families who live in Annandale but also students from all faiths and families from outside our area to apply to become part of our family.

If you wish to know more, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting with myself and a tour of our school. Come meet our wonderful students, staff and parents.

I look forward to seeing you,

Jo Bright

St Brendan's Catholic Primary School Annandale HistoryHistory

St Brendan’s Catholic Primary School Annandale was opened in 1898 by the Sisters of St Joseph. It was originally housed in a terrace on Johnston Street, before moving to the present site in Collins Street. It continued under the leadership of the Sisters until 1975, when the first lay principal was appointed. Presently, the school caters for children from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The person of Jesus Christ is seen as the foundation upon which St Brendan’s is built. We are not only committed to the education of each child but also to the further development of Christian values. We strive to give witness to these in our daily living and encourage the children to do likewise.
